I write, direct, produce, edit and shoot. I use the title StoryWorker instead of a long hyphenate.
Since I founded Howl At The Moon I’ve been able to tell stories for HBO, NBC, SyFy, KPMG, NICKELODEON, FOX, TV Land, SUNDANCE and many others.
I enjoy writing everything from promos and news features to movies. Four of my feature scripts have been produced and one of them I directed. A favorite quote about my writing showed up in the NY Post of all places - “Finally – just what the world has been waiting for – an anti-war monster movie! Hilarious Good Fun!”
The film critic was talking about MANTICORE, now a cult favorite on SyFy Channel. It’s set in war-torn Iraq during the early Bush years and the producers were brave enough to leave in my scathing dialogue mocking the hunt for fictitious WMD.
Another great quote came from Brian Williams - “If everyone in the (TV) business had John’s creativity and sensibilities, I dare say it would be a much different place.”
I spent a year wandering the US with Brian shooting behind the scenes of NBC Nightly News as he made his transition from reporter to anchor. The promos and features won awards, but Brian's outtakes are hilarious. They are locked away until he leaves Nightly for SNL.
Can I drop one more name? (Isn’t that what Bios are for?) How about Lefty? You know, Phil Mickelson. I have been lucky enough to chase Phil up and down the fairways with my HD camera during KPMG corporate outings for the last couple of years. My friends think it’s sad that I still can’t hit a golf ball straight.
My work has taken me to many cool places here in the States and around the globe. Spending five months in Russia immediately after the fall of communism was one of the more interesting assignments. Turner sent me to Moscow as creative director for the very first independent TV station in Russia. Think Wild West: no rules, and vodka instead of whiskey.
I just wrapped on a series of short documentaries about the WWII veterans featured in the HBO miniseries ‘The Pacific’. The docus I produced, directed and edited air on HBO in conjunction with the miniseries and extended versions will be released on the DVD.
I have a soft spot for nonprofits and have worked with Jazz House Kids and The League. Both New Jersey based education programs. |
